A Little Dabble with Primal Astrology
So, the other day, I bumped into this thing called a primal astrology calculator. Heard a few folks talking about it, you know, how it combines your usual star sign with your Chinese zodiac animal to give you a “primal animal.” Sounded like a bit of a laugh, so I thought, why not give it a whirl?

Finding one wasn’t hard. Just typed it into a search engine, and a few options popped up. I picked one that looked simple enough, no fancy stuff. It just asked for my birth date – day, month, year. No time of birth needed, which was good, because honestly, who remembers that offhand unless their mom drilled it into them?
I punched in my details. There wasn’t any dramatic loading screen or anything. Pretty quick, actually. Bam! It told me my primal animal. Let’s just say, for the sake of it, it called me a “Pondering Beaver” or something equally quirky. Came with a whole list of traits too.
- Supposedly very diligent. Okay, I can see that sometimes.
- Likes to build things, create security. Yeah, that resonates a bit.
- Can be a bit stubborn. My wife would definitely agree with that one, no calculator needed.
- Sometimes gets too caught up in the details. Guilty as charged, I suppose.
Now, I’m not one to hang my hat on these kinds of things. Years ago, I’d have just scoffed and moved on. Said it was all a load of nonsense. And to be fair, a lot of it probably is, just generic statements that could apply to anyone if you squint hard enough. But you know, life throws things at you. There was this one time, a few years back, when things were a bit up in the air for me. Felt like I was just drifting, not really sure what I was good at anymore, or where I was headed. It wasn’t a major crisis like losing a job overnight, nothing that dramatic, thankfully. It was more of a slow burn, a feeling of being stuck in a rut.
During that phase, I started looking at all sorts of things, not for answers, mind you, but more for… I don’t know, different ways to think about myself. Personality quizzes, those strength-finder things, even silly stuff like this primal animal calculator. It wasn’t about believing every word. It was more like holding up a weirdly shaped mirror. Sometimes you see a reflection, or a part of one, that makes you go “Huh, never thought of it that way.” Or it just gives you a label for something you already felt, which can be surprisingly helpful.
So, this “Pondering Beaver” thing? I read through it, had a chuckle. Some bits felt a bit off, too general. But a couple of points actually made me pause and think. Did it change my life? Nah. But it was a five-minute diversion that sparked a little bit of self-reflection. And sometimes, that’s all you need from these things. It’s like those little brain teasers; you do them for the momentary engagement, not because you think they’ll unlock the secrets of the universe.

I even got my daughter to try it. She got something like a “Playful Otter” and thought it was hilarious, especially the bits about being easily distracted. We had a good laugh comparing our “primal animals.” It’s just another one of those internet curiosities, really. Take it with a grain of salt, maybe a whole shaker full. But if it makes you think for a second, or gives you a chuckle, then it’s done its job, hasn’t it?
