They got the eyeballs, they got the subscriptions, they got the whole country talking. But they also got a whole load of serious backlash that probably involved a lot of stress, lawyers, and maybe even some genuine fear for their safety and the project’s future.
It’s often not about what the director or writers want to show in an ideal world. It’s about what they can show and still keep the ship afloat. My guess is there were some serious conversations like: ‘Okay, we’ve established the world, the characters, the themes. Do we really need to keep pushing that particular button and invite another wave of attacks, boycotts, and legal dramas?’
They probably weighed it up. More controversy and potentially more viewers drawn by scandal, versus a slightly more “acceptable” narrative that keeps the story going without risking getting completely shut down. And it looks like caution won. They decided to focus on the other dramatic elements, the power plays, the guru’s manipulations, which are still there, but without the explicit stuff that really got certain groups riled up.
So, yeah, I don’t think it’s some deep artistic shift as much as a practical decision. They pushed the boundary, got burned a bit, and then decided to pull back to a safer distance. It’s a common story, really. You make a lot of noise, then you figure out how to keep making your stuff without constantly being in the eye of a storm. They probably figured they could still tell their story effectively, maybe even reach people who were put off by the earlier explicitness, by dialing back on that one aspect.
